Runway damage like this can leave an airbase vulnerable and without the ability to launch or recover aircraft. In an atmosphere of war it is crucial to establish a Minimum Operation Strip of MOS as quickly as possible.

Using state of the art composite materials and fabrication techniques a quick assembly, lightweight mat has been developed as part of the rapid runway repair system.

When deployed each mat is 30 feet (9.14m) x 54 feet (19.81m) and is made of a series of nine panels, each 6 feet (1.83m) by 30 feet (9.14m) and connected by unique elastomer hinges. The mat is less than 1/4 of an inch (0.64cm) thick, weight is only 2 pounds per square foot.

Two mats with joining panels are folded into a highly transportable package. Just 30 feet (9.14m) by 6 feet (1.83) by 18 inches high (.45m) for transport and storage. The system was designed to be compact lightweight, and air transportable.
The mat assembly is then towed over the filled crater and centered.

Anchor holes are drilled into the pavement and the mat is anchored to the undamaged runway surface with high strength anchor bolts.

Mats can be joined quickly with the joiner panels, producing a 60 foot (18.29m) by 54 foot (19.81m) surface for the repair of most craters but a number of mats can be spliced together for repairs of almost any size crater.

Because the panels utilize special elastomer hinges, the mats unfold and are ready for use, pre-assembly is eliminated.

The composite mat system was designed to support tactical and C-130 aircraft operations. It may also be well suited for repairs of damaged taxiway helapads, tarmacs and other applications.
